Eritrean National Commission: Town Hall Meetings in Sudan

Eritrean National Commission for Democratic Change (ENCDC) held two successful town hall meetings in Kassala, Sudan.   

The first Kassala meeting took place on the 6th November 2010 and many Eritreans from various political organization, EDA and non-EDA, came in droves to attend the meeting. The next day, Nov. 7, 2007 the commissioners also held another town hall meeting with Eritrean refugees from all walks of life and civilians who belong to different organizations.  The organizations that participated at this meeting were many, such as women’s, youth’s, students’, teachers’, peasants’ and many others. 

Both meetings were conducted by Commissioner Mohammed Salih Abubaker, Ali Suleiman, Ibrahim Malem and Jewaher Mohamed Ali.  The commissioners discussed the recently accomplished national conference, its process, its outcome and its achievements.  The Commissioners also elaborated the process of establishing ENCDC, its constitution and it mission and objectives.   Furthermore, they discussed ENCDC plans, activities and the need to set up local national congress committees to facilitate the mobilization and organization of the public for the upcoming congress. 

Commissioner Mohammed Salih Abubaker who is the head of organizational committee of the ENCDC, stressed the need to get ready and organize in a manner that would be more effective than ever before.  Mr. Ali Suleiman, who is the chairman of the political committee of the ENCDC, underlined the readiness of the Commission to work together with all the forces of democratic change to make the congress a success.  Commissioner Jewahir also called on the participants to quadruple their efforts to make the upcoming National Congress for Democratic Change a success.  She said that all Eritreans should join hands to save their country and people at this hour of need and work together towards democracy and fundamental change.  Commissioner Ibrahim Moualem also stressed that we need to be mindful of the current dire state of Eritrea and its people and conduct ourselves accordingly.

The attendees were enthusiastically engaged in the question and answer session and affirmed their readiness to work with the ENCDC. At the end of the meetings the commissioners thanked the attendees and the organizers for organizing the meetings, for the high turnout and for showing such a high interest on ENCDC.

It is highly anticipated that the upcoming National Congress will pave the way for radical change in the Eritrean political era. It is also reported that similar meetings are being held by commissioners in many other metropolitan cities in Sudan, Ethiopia, Europe, North America, Australia and the Middle East.
