About the Commission

An Eritrean Commission was established by a National Conference for Democratic Change (NCDC), which was convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia between 31st July and 9th August, 2010. The NCDC decided that a National Congress be held within a year and a Provisional Assembly shall be formed therein. The overall objective is to get rid of the dictatorial regime in Eritrea and establish a democratic and constitutional government.

The Commission constitutes all sectors of our population: civilians, politicians, youth and women. Its populace came from highland and lowland Eritrea and is from both the main confessions – Muslims and Christians.

Among the functions of the Commission are:

·        to mobilize and organize Eritreans all over the globe and make the upcoming National Congress a success,

·        to survey and study documents relevant to the National Congress and beyond: such as strategy paper for the long term approach and an action plan on how to implement the strategy, a charter or provisional constitution,

·        to brief and win international support

This Commission is composed of 53 members. It elected from within, a seven-man Executive Body, responsible to give guidance and monitor the tasks of the Commission. The Executive Body consists of the chairman, a deputy, a secretary, and four heads of departments - political, organizational, financial, and media. The rest of the Commission members are divided among the four departments. The Commission has also elected an auditor general.
